Sanggau, MelayuOnline.com- A multi-ethnic dance performed by 20 people consisting of various tribes such as Malay, Dayak, and Chinese, opened officially West Kalimantan Malay Cultural Festival (FBMKB) 2008 in Sanggau District that will be available during July 21 - 24, 2008.
A graceful Malay dance combined with rhythmical dances typically of Dayak and Chinese, offered a beautiful and meaningful dance. The dance depicted a cultural diversity that was unified in such way to produce a beautiful traditional performing art and hopefully, it would be beneficial for humankind.
The fifth FBMKB was officially launched by the governor of West Kalimantan Province, Drs. Cornelis, M.H., on Tuesday, July 21st, 2008 in Sanggau District Office. According to the head committee of the festival, Muhammad Natsir HS., BA, this festival was attended by 14 Malay Adat and Cultural Assemblies from the entire West Kalimantan Province. Amongst them were the representatives from Sanggau (20 representatives), Sekadau (160), Sintang (100), Kapuas Hulu (85), Melawi (110), Landak (45), Pontianak City (80), Singkawang (80), Sambas (60), Bengkayang (85), and Ketapang (120).
Likewise, came also amongst those guests were the King of Almukarromah Sintang Kingdom, the King of Ismahayana Landak Kingdom, the King of Paku Surya Negara Sanggau Kingdom, the King of Kubu Raya Kingdom, and the youngest king – 11 years old – the King of Sambas Kingdom.
In addition, this festival was also participated by several Malay prominent figures from Malacca, Brunei Darussalam, and other governmental or non-governmental institutions like Bangka-Belitung Tourism Service and the Center for Research and Development of Malay Culture (BKPBM).
In his remark Natsir said, “I hope this festival could be a medium to develop Malay culture. And, I wish this festival could bridge the whole tribes existing in West Kalimantan to raise the awareness of respecting and appreciating other people.”
H. Abang Imien Thaha, the Head of Malay Adat and Cultural Assembly of West Kalimantan, said, “The fifth FBMKB should be a momentum to preserve, to develop, and to improve the quality of Malay culture. By that way, we hope that it could be groundwork to improve West Kalimantan‘s prosperity from tourism sector.”
In his opening speech Imien Thaha expressed his gratitude for all the committee and MelayuOnline.com for publishing the information of FBMKB through the internet.
Similarly, the Governor of West Kalimantan, Drs. Cornelis, M.H., also emphasized the urgency of cultural preservation to improve West Kalimantan people‘s prosperity by enhancing tourism potencies there. The governor hoped that modern information technology advancement could be utilized to preserve cultural heritages in West Kalimantan.
After the opening ceremony, all of the participants consisting of Dayak, Madura, Minangkabau, and Chinese tribes, gathered to hold a cultural parade from Sanggau District Office to Paku Surya Negara Palace. They tried to perform all of the best things they could such as exhibiting a replica of Malay traditional house, Lancang Kuning traditional boat, Reog Ponorogo, and many more.
During the parade, thousands of Sanggau local inhabitants stood along the sidewalk watching the parade enthusiastically. Some of them tried to document that cheerful event either by photography or audio visual media. They did not feel the rain was falling; they kept watching the parade.
In Surya Paku Negara Palace, a cultural exhibition was hold; amongst them was a simple stand of BKPBM with all its products such as folklore books and souvenirs of MelayuOnline.com. BKPBM‘s stand could attract many people to visit and buy BKPBM‘s products. Out of prediction, in 2.30 p.m., all of BKPBM‘s products were sold out.
